Over 500 enthusiastic participants gathered at Victoria Square, in the heart of the Midlands, to celebrate the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY), marking a vibrant beginning to #YogaInTheSquare. The event created a powerful atmosphere of unity, wellbeing, and cultural harmony, reflecting the global spirit of #YogaForHealthyAgeing and #IDY2026.
The day commenced with a media interaction by Consul General Dr Venkatachalam Murugan, who highlighted the growing global relevance of Yoga as a symbol of health, harmony, and inner balance. He described Yoga as India’s timeless gift to humanity and underlined key Government of India initiatives under the Ministry of AYUSH, including Yoga Mahotsav 2026, the Yoga Sangam Portal, Yoga Park Portal, the Khajuraho countdown programme, and the global Guinness World Record Yoga initiative.
In his welcome address at Victoria Square, the Consul General further outlined the Consulate’s curated Yoga Mahotsav programme, which includes seven specialised Yoga sessions, Ayurveda integration, Yoga Asana competitions, and thematic exhibitions designed to promote holistic wellness and community engagement.
Distinguished dignitaries, including the Mayor of Royal Sutton Coldfield, Cllr Dr Nitish Raut, and Deputy Lord Lieutenant Dwan Ward CBE, were felicitated on the occasion. Both dignitaries highlighted Yoga’s universal appeal and its increasing importance in promoting health, peace, and community wellbeing across societies.
The Yoga Protocol Session, led by Ms Maria, Mr Andrew, and Dr Madhu, brought participants together in a shared experience of mindfulness, breathwork, and inner calm. This was followed by vibrant Yoga Asana demonstrations showcasing strength, flexibility, discipline, and focus, with participants of all age groups demonstrating Yoga as a holistic way of life beyond physical exercise.
From graceful individual postures to dynamic group performances, the event reflected a harmonious blend of tradition and modern wellness. The spirit of community celebration continued with the felicitation of winners of the Yoga Asana Competition (Adult Category), recognising their dedication, discipline, and inspiring performances.
As part of the wider Yoga Mahotsav programme, Ayurveda information stalls were also set up at Victoria Square, offering free guidance on stress management, sleep health, digestion, and overall holistic wellbeing. Experts including Dr Ashok Kumar, Ms Anu Monga (Anupama Wellness), and Dr Vatsala engaged visitors with practical insights into balanced and healthy living.
The 12th International Day of Yoga in Birmingham stood as a powerful celebration of wellness, unity, and shared human values—bringing together diverse communities in the true spirit of Yoga for a healthier, more peaceful, and more connected world.
