On the evening of 26th January, communities and friends of India gathered at City Council Birmingham to celebrate the 77th Republic Day of India, marking an evening of patriotism, honour, and respect.
Honoured remarks were delivered by Lord-Lieutenant Derick Anderson OBE, Lord Whitby, High Sheriff of the West Midlands Mr Mark Smith, Lord Mayor of Birmingham Cllr Zafar Iqbal MBE, Mayor of Sandwell Cllr Steve Melia, Mayor of Solihull Cllr Annette Mackenzie & Consul General of Romania Ms Mihaela Savu. They highlighted the strength of the Indian diaspora and the warm relations of the Midlands with India.
Acting Consul General Aman Bansal addressed the gathering, speaking about the initiatives of the Government of India for the diaspora and celebrating shared cultural and economic bonds.
The evening also showcased the richness of Indian culture. Over 150 guests participated in the Vande Mataram mass singing on its 150th anniversary, alongside beautiful harp renditions, classical dances, and soulful songs, with vocals by talented young artists in Birmingham, celebrating India’s heritage.
The event was a true reflection of the enduring friendship between India and the Midlands, and the vibrancy of the Indian community in the UK.
