Midnight Freedom Walk in Birmingham on the eve of India's Independence Day

As part of the celebrations of 70th Anniversary of Indian Independence, the Indian Community supported by the Consulate General of India, Birmingham organized a first ever historic Independence walk at the stroke of midnight an the 15th of August 2017. This was a mile-long walk commencing from Victoria Square to the Consulate. This event was full of colour and joy with the participants from all age groups displaying ''70 Years of Freedom'' logo on their chests carrying Indian flags and colorful beacons with great enthusiasm amidst hearty chants of 'Vande Mataram' and strains of patriotic songs like 'saare jahan se achha'.

About 200 prominent Indian Community leaders and dignitaries not only from Birmingham but from other distant areas like Leicester, Coventry, Wolverhampton etc participated in the walk headed by Dr. Aman Puri, Consul General of India, Birmingham. The walk culminated at the Indian Consulate a few minutes before midnight. CG, Dr. Aman Puri while addressing the gathering precisely at the stroke of midnight hour, mentioned the sacrifices of the freedom fighters, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's call for creating a new India and also referred to the historic ''Tryst with Destiny'' speech delivered by the country's First Prime Minister on August 15, 1947 and in conclusion he also quoted from the speech of Hon'ble President of India.
