In the morning of Oct 2, Mahatma Gandhi's 147th Birth Anniversary was celebrated at Consulate General of India, Birmingham. Floral tributes were paid to Gandhiji by Consul General J.K.Sharma, Mr Moahammad Zulqar Nain, Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Birmingham and Community Leaders e.g.Mrs Satinder Taunque, Deputy Lieutenant, Dr Krishan Kumar, Founder, Gitanjali Multiligual Literary Circle, Councillor Ramesh Srivastava, Chair, British Association of People of Asian Origin and Former Mayor of Rugby, Shri J.S Taunque, Deputy Lieutenant, Councillor Ram Lakha of Coventry, Councillor Rati Lal Govind of Leicester, Dr Shankar Khemka of Nottingham, Shri Tarang Shelat, Hindu Council, Mrs.Chithra Ramakrishnan, Founder, Shruthi UK, and Shri Hamid Malik, Federation of Indian Muslim Organisations. In their speeches Consul General and other dignitaries paid glowing tributes to Gandhiji and explained Gandhiji's principles of Satyagrah and Non Violence. As part of celebrations the webcast of inauguration of Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra in New Delhi by Hon'ble Prime Minister was screened. Gandhiji's favourite bhajans were sung by Ms Aatreyi Chattopadhyay and Ms Beauty Sinha. About 100 members of Indian community participated in the celebrations.
