Visit of Consul General Dr Venkatachalam Murugan to Bradford and Leeds on March 7, 2024

To enhace the Consulate’s engagement in the region of Yorkshire Consul General Dr Venkatachalam Murugan visited Bradford and Leeds on March 7, 2024. During his visit to the University of Bradford, he had a constructive dialogue with Vice Chancellor Shirley Congdon. The meeting paved the way for collaborative opportunities in education and shed light on various initiatives undertaken by the University of Bradford. Notably, the welfare of Indian students emerged as a highlight.

The visit involved an interactive session with representatives of Indian students. Consul General addressed their concerns regarding their stay in the UK, post-study opportunities, and ways to stay connected with the Consulate.

During interactions with academic staff, the Consul General expressed satisfaction with the existing collaborative projects between the university and India, while exploring avenues to enhance this bilateral exchange further. In discussions with Vice Chancellor, several key areas were explored, including plans for establishing a Gandhi Bust at the university, aligning with its existing Peace Centre. Additionally, proposals for joint business and cultural events, particularly in light of Bradford's designation as the UK City of Culture 2025, were deliberated upon, signifying a commitment to cross-cultural exchange and collaboration.

Additionaly, Consul General also met the newly elected Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Abigail Marshall Katung. Discussions revolved around fostering collaboration between the Consulate and Leeds City for the welfare and growth of the Indian communities in the region and greater cultural exchange.

The visit culminated in a productive meeting with Mayor Tracy Brabin of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and her colleagues. Conversations focused on the opportunities for Indian businesses in key sectors such as aerospace, textiles, media, and healthcare, highlighting the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships. The Combined Authority has expressed their keen interest in working with the Consulate and will be happy to foster any delegation visits & support investments in the North.
